Definition of Data Warehousing:

According to Bill Inmon (Father of Data Warehousing),

A Data Warehouse is a "Subject-Oriented, Time-Variant, Nonvolatile and Integrated collection of data in support of decision making"

  • Subject-oriented, meaning that the data in the database is organized so that all the data elements relating to the same real-world event or object are linked together;
  • Time-variant, meaning that the changes to the data in the database are tracked and recorded so that reports can be produced showing changes over time;
  • Non-volatile, meaning that data in the database is never over-written or deleted, once committed, the data is static, read-only, but retained for future reporting;
  • Integrated, meaning that the database contains data from most or all of an organization's operational applications, and that this data is made consistent.

In computer science a data warehouse is a database used for reporting and analysis. The data stored in the warehouse and it is uploaded from the operational systems. The data may pass through an operational data store for additional operations before it is used in the DW for reporting.
A data warehouse has some functions in three layers: staging, integration, and access. Staging is used to store raw data for use by developers. The integration layer is used to integrate data and to have a level of abstraction from users. The access layer is for getting data out for users.
